How to Work Abroad in New Zealand

Prepare for Jobs in New Zealand

Set goals

Before jumping into work life in New Zealand, it helps to have a loose plan. Nothing too intense, just a few things to keep you grounded.

  • Pick a place, not just a job. Jobs come and go, but where you live shapes your whole vibe. Choose a spot you’ll enjoy outside of work.
  • Try a few things. It’s super normal to bounce between jobs. Barista in Queenstown, vineyard work in Marlborough. It all counts.
  • Leave space for the in-between. You might have downtime. Use it to explore, breathe, or do absolutely nothing. It is part of the deal.

Understand the benefits

Nobody moves to New Zealand just for the job. The real value is in how work fits into everything else.

  • You actually get time off. Full-time workers get at least four weeks of paid vacation. People take their breaks seriously, and no one expects you to be “always on.”
  • Workplaces feel human. Most offices and job sites are casual, respectful, and pretty chill. Titles matter less than attitude.
  • Nature is always right there. Even if you’re in a city, you’re never far from beaches, mountains, or hikes. It makes balancing work and life way easier.

Things to know

New Zealand is welcoming, but a few small heads-ups can make settling in smoother.

  • Culture - Kiwis are kind and helpful, but don’t expect over-the-top service or small talk. It’s chill, not cold.
  • Paperwork - You’ll need an IRD number (tax ID) to get paid legally. Apply for it online soon after you arrive.
  • Transport - In cities, public transit works fine. But in smaller towns, having a car or even a bike makes life way easier.

Working in one of the Championship Golf Clubs in New Zealand

November 23, 2025by: Justus Theodor Christiansen - GermanyProgram: Pre-placed Jobs in New Zealand Before You Arrive

When I arrived in New Zealand in September, I was welcomed incredibly warmly. The accommodation in Auckland was great, and there were many people who were about to start the same adventure, which made it very easy to make connections quickly. I also received a lot of help when buying my car, which I really appreciated. About a week and a half after arriving, I drove to my job with my car. I was welcomed just as warmly at the golf club. everyone showed me around, explained how everything works, and introduced me to the place where I would be living. Two days later, I had a wonderful first induction day, and ever since, everyone has been extremely kind and supportive. On my days off, I also had plenty of time to explore the surroundings and do a few activities.
