Why Work Abroad
You made it this far, and aside from the obvious change-making, fireworks-exploding-with-excitement, boundless opportunities to do amazing things, let’s take a look at some of the highlights of women’s studies jobs.
There is a rather broad scope of women’s studies jobs that exist in the world. People from most academic and professional backgrounds will have something to bring to the field and will not only be able to utilise their skills, but grow and share them with others as well (kind of like watering a beautiful plant and watching it flower, but better!). All of this means you’ll have plenty of room to multi-potentialite and incorporate a range of activities and experiences into one beautifully packaged women’s studies job abroad. You definitely won’t get bored either, because you will always be learning from your job and building upon your skills.
If that’s not enough, imagine going to bed every night knowing that you did something that really mattered! Jobs in women’s studies aren’t positions that just pay the bills, these opportunities are so much more, and you will certainly reap the benefits of knowing that you are helping to empower the next generation of strong women who will lead independent and successful lives. Contributing to a bigger picture and actually getting to see how your work impacts the lives of others has to be number one on the list of reasons to pick a career in women’s studies, right?
Locations
From East to West there’s plenty of potential for checking off some bucket-list worthy destinations as you build a career in women’s studies abroad. One of the most popular locations for women’s studies jobs abroad is Spain. That’s right, you could start your day working toward gender equality and end it sipping sangria and munching on delicious tapas as the sun sets over a plaza. Spain has pledged itself to promoting gender equality, and you can get in on the ground floor.
If that’s not far enough for you, think Asia. From the rapidly-developing nation of China, with great walls and even greater opportunities, to the technological development boom that is Singapore, there is a world of choice when it comes to women’s studies jobs abroad. Uncertain what culture and country will suit your interests best? Malaysia also offers a unique amalgamation of traditional cultures, creative development, beautiful beaches, sparkling cities, and job opportunities!
Wherever you decide to go, dream big and travel far!
Women's Studies Jobs Abroad
No two women’s studies jobs will be the same. The scope of your work will depend on your host country, and the cultural context surrounding gender equality and women. Based on your host community’s needs, your work could be focused on literacy and education, healthcare, economic empowerment, or academic/field research in international development and human rights.
Teaching. Most jobs in women’s studies are some type of teaching placement. You’ll likely be working to educate women by providing them with the knowledge they need to succeed in the future, whether that means working on basic reading and writing or teaching English as a second language. In teaching positions, you’ll be empowering girls and women to take control of their own lives and opens the door to independence through increased opportunities for employment too. Teaching opportunities with women may entail working with women of all ages, from elementary students all the way to adults.
Vocational Training. Academic education is not the whole story, however, so offering vocational skills and training to women of all ages can give them the potential to learn skills and adopt a career doing something they truly enjoy. Sharing your own skills and experiences to train women will increase their employability and scope for income generation, further developing their potential for financial independence. In vocational training positions, you can work with local women to teach business development, help them with their job search and interview techniques, or help them better understand how to manage their personal finances.
Research & Development. If we do not understand the challenges faced by women around the globe, then we cannot begin to understand what types of solutions can be implemented. Conducting research to identify and understand these social problems and how they might be solved provides vital insight into how we can open doors for women to develop and grow. Research positions might involve working with local or international organisations or academic institutions, such as a university department, on varying levels.
Nonprofits & NGOs. If you’re a jack of all trades who wants to try their hand at all of the above women’s studies jobs, your best bet is working with local nonprofits and NGOs. These positions may involve working in everything from general administration to HR, accountancy, and finance to business development or project management. Getting connected to an NGO will allow you to explore different approaches to women’s studies and apply your background skills to support the work being undertaken. With the wide scope of nonprofit and NGO positions available, you could be working in education and literacy, healthcare, economic empowerment, and research and development, all while furthering women’s agendas.
Benefits & Challenges
Jobs in women’s studies are sure to be rewarding. You will wake up every morning knowing you are making a difference in the lives of women, not only in your host country, but worldwide. Through the process of empowering women in your host community, you will be empowering yourself to keep working and fighting the good fight too. Not to mention, you’ll learn a whole lot from the men and women in the communities you serve.
Though it will be rewarding work, change is often slow, so women’s studies jobs will therefore prove to be challenging. Underlying cultural constraints and deeply embedded social norms take time to deconstruct and reconstruct. As you tackle these problems, you might not see the fruits of your labor immediately, which can be frustrating. Always remember, paradigm shifts takes time, but it can be done!
If you’re passionate about women’s issues and you are looking for opportunities that allow you to make an impact and utilise your skills, women’s studies jobs are certainly worth pursuing. Just be prepared to work hard and navigate the field, and you will reap the rewards exponentially!

The Perfect Start to My Australian Adventure – Highly Recommend!
February 17, 2025by: Sophie Laplane - United StatesProgram: Melbourne Gap Year: Paid Work Opportunities in Australia
Joining the Melbourne Gap Year tour with Grabatour was the best way to start my working holiday in Australia. From day one, everything was well-organized, and the team made sure we had all the essentials sorted—bank accounts, tax file numbers, SIM cards, and even job support. It took away all the stress of settling in and allowed me to focus on enjoying the experience. The itinerary was a perfect balance of practical help and exciting activities. We explored Melbourne’s vibrant laneways, visited St. Kilda Beach, and got to experience the city’s amazing food and coffee culture. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to help with anything we needed. One of the best parts of the tour was the people. I met an incredible group of fellow travelers, and the shared experiences made it easy to form friendships. Even after the tour ended, we stayed in touch and continued exploring Australia together. If you’re planning a working holiday in Australia, I highly recommend this tour. It gives you the perfect start, a great group of friends, and the confidence to begin your adventure the right way!
Excellent working holiday intro tour in Melbourne
February 17, 2025by: Alexandra Paul - United StatesProgram: Melbourne Gap Year: Paid Work Opportunities in Australia
I recently joined the Melbourne Gap Year tour with Grabatour, and it was hands down the perfect way to kick-start my Australian adventure! From the moment I arrived, everything was well-organized, making the transition into a new country smooth and stress-free. The itinerary was a great mix of practical support and fun experiences. The team helped us set up essentials like bank accounts, tax file numbers, and SIM cards, which saved me so much time and hassle. They also provided great advice on job hunting, which gave me a real head start in finding work. Beyond the practical stuff, the city tours were a highlight. We explored Melbourne’s famous laneways, checked out the street art, and visited St. Kilda Beach, all while learning about the city’s culture. There were also plenty of opportunities to socialize, and I met an amazing group of people from all over the world. The support from their local team didn’t stop when the tour ended—they were always there to help with any questions I had. If you’re looking for an exciting, hassle-free way to start your working holiday in Australia, I highly recommend this tour!

I spent one month doing an internship. All of the staff were really friendly and they gave me a lot of freedom and responsibilities in my tasks. The school is located in the best area of Bilbao and at a 30 min metro distance from the beach! Being part of a young, international and dynamic marketing team I am learning a lot more than just Spanish. Having a German supervisor makes things go as smooth as possible.

May 07, 2019by: Taylor Misiak - GermanyProgram: Melbourne Gap Year: Paid Work Opportunities in Australia
Having read all the reviews, we decided to join this program for our working holiday in Australia. We had such an amazing time in Melbourne and got to see so much of the city during the intro week. I appreciate all that is written in the positive reviews. Activities were great from the start. The other people who were going in our group was nice and friendly. They kept their word and that is very important. Additionally, they helped us out with all the Aussie admin stuff during the intro week and supported us with farm work opportunities in Queensland since we all wanted to do the 88 days regional work for the second year visa extension. Highly recommended!

April 16, 2019by: Samuel Schindler - GermanyProgram: Melbourne Gap Year: Paid Work Opportunities in Australia
Booking this paid work package was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I would recommend it to anyone. The week itself is definitely worth the money since we experienced many amazing activities such as wine tasting penguin spotting getaway trip etc.. and all the extra help especially employment help from the team is what makes this tour so unique. Everyone involved goes above and beyond to help support you and make you feel like home. I got my first job Down Under in Northern territory to extend my second year visa thank to the team. Much appreciated!!
The application process was fairly simple!
November 23, 2018by: Brooke Thatcher - AustraliaProgram: Jobs and internships in Spain
As there was always someone to inform me or for me to ask if I had any difficulties. Once I arrived to my destination, as they were already expecting me the process was smooth and I was shown where I would be staying and given a brief guide on where and what I would be doing. I greatly enjoyed my internship and the bar work exceeded my expectations. The work was enjoyable and very social as I was able to meet hundreds of people every day and there was events to make things more interesting. Initially I expected to do some basic cooking but much to my surprise as summer started there were fun weekly events such as the barbecue and paella evenings which were held outside on the terrace. As about the accommodation - the room was spacious and included sufficient space for all my belongings and alongside this included a table and some other shelves and drawers and a large floor space. The beds were clean and I was able to change my own sheets whenever I felt necessary. I have definitely achieved my goal which was to develop my Spanish speaking skills. At first I was unable to speak and on some occasions dealing with colleagues and customers proved difficult. But without a doubt I can say I had a fantastic summer and made some amazing friends who I have already planned to meet with again. My Spanish ability is considerably better as I feel confident to hold a conversation on a variety of topics and work in a Spanish speaking environment with minimal problems. The area itself was a beautiful place and on my days off I used the opportunity to visit the tourist sites, but also as I spoke and got to know local people, I discovered lesser known areas such as a nearby fishing spot only 20 minutes away from the city centre. All my expectations were satisfied and even more. The living conditions that the hotel offered us were very good and comfortable. I met people from all over the world and experiences and emotions were wonderful. The experience I gained there was very useful for my future and the profession I have been focusing on.

Fantastic experience in Spain
June 30, 2018by: Martha Leblanc - United StatesProgram: Jobs and internships in Spain
If you are looking to improve your Spanish skills, this is the place to go. Bilbao is the safest place I have ever lived in my life. Our group got along great and I really enjoyed making friends with the international students that also attended Instituto Hemingway. Instituto regularly schedules cultural events, and we attended nearly all of them. Languages and traveling are probably two of my favorite things in life so I absolutely had the time of my life studying abroad and am making plans to return (hopefully to live) as soon as possible. Bilbao is a great city for making new friends and trying new things. During my time in Spain I explored cultural differences and their social and historical causes and my knowledge of the Spanish language increased in a way that it never could have had I not been so utterly immersed in it. Travelling around Spain and Europe in general is so cheap! Please do it and have your headquarters in Bilbao in Northern Spain
