Eligibility for this full-time position includes: - Be between 18 and 30 with at least a high school diploma (female au pairs are placed quickly, while male au pairs can be placed on an as-requested basis) - Hold a passport from the United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand - Have previous childcare/babysitting experience with references and a genuine love of children - Provide a statement of health, background check, and 3 references - Be interviewed by phone or Skype to be accepted by the family - Be able to commit to 10-12 months as an au pair

How to Work Abroad in Netherlands

Prepare for Jobs in Netherlands

Set goals

So, you're eyeing the Netherlands for your next work move. Solid choice. But before you pack your bike helmet and start brushing up on your Dutch, get clear on what you want from the experience.

  • Clarify your purpose. Are you here to grow professionally, explore a new culture, or reset your lifestyle? Be honest.
  • Make goals tangible. Set clear targets like learning Dutch basics, growing your network, or biking to work without Google Maps.
  • Create a timeline. Know what you want to achieve in the first month, halfway through, and by the end of your stay.

Understand the benefits

Living and working in the Netherlands comes with perks that go beyond great cheese and canals.

  • Your time is your own. Expect reasonable hours, real lunch breaks, and respect for life outside the office.
  • No need to fake Dutch fluency. English is widely used, especially in cities and international roles.
  • Getting around is easy. Whether it’s commuting by bike or hopping a train to another country, life here moves smoothly.

Things to know

The Netherlands is a welcoming place to work, but knowing how things run will help you settle in faster.

  • Language - English is common in many workplaces, especially in tech and international companies. Learning some Dutch helps with daily life and shows respect.
  • Cost of living - Amsterdam and Utrecht are expensive, but cities like Eindhoven or Groningen offer more space and a slower pace without losing charm.
  • Work culture - Expect direct communication, shared decision-making, and a strong coffee culture. It’s relaxed, but still professional.
