How to Work Abroad in Hospitality

Prepare for Hospitality Jobs Abroad

Understand the benefits

It might look like you’re just checking in guests or clearing tables, but behind the scenes, hospitality jobs abroad are teaching you way more.

  • Get fluent in people. Every day, you’ll meet travelers from all over, plus work with locals who know the area inside and out. You’ll pick up how to read a room, handle conflict, and make strangers feel at home.
  • Level up your work game. Hospitality isn’t always easy, but that’s what makes it valuable. You’ll get sharper under pressure, better at thinking on your feet, and more confident when things don’t go to plan.
  • Build a resume that actually stands out. International hospitality experience shows future employers that you’re adaptable, good with people, and not afraid to try new things. That’s gold in almost any field, not just hospitality.

Things to know

Working hospitality abroad is less "vacation vibes" and more "fast pace with a view." It’s fun, but it also asks a lot of you. Here’s how to be ready for it.

  • Pace - Hospitality moves fast. Guests come and go, problems pop up without warning, and your shifts might not be 9–5. Be ready to jump in and keep things moving.
  • Culture - You’re on someone else’s turf. How guests are greeted, what’s considered polite, and what’s expected from staff can change drastically between countries. Watch and learn early.
  • Language - English gets you far, but not everywhere. If you’re working in a rural area or a small family-run spot, basic phrases in the local language go a long way. Even “please” and “thank you” can open doors.

Working in one of the Championship Golf Clubs in New Zealand

November 23, 2025by: Justus Theodor Christiansen - GermanyProgram: Pre-placed Jobs in New Zealand Before You Arrive
10

When I arrived in New Zealand in September, I was welcomed incredibly warmly. The accommodation in Auckland was great, and there were many people who were about to start the same adventure, which made it very easy to make connections quickly. I also received a lot of help when buying my car, which I really appreciated. About a week and a half after arriving, I drove to my job with my car. I was welcomed just as warmly at the golf club. everyone showed me around, explained how everything works, and introduced me to the place where I would be living. Two days later, I had a wonderful first induction day, and ever since, everyone has been extremely kind and supportive. On my days off, I also had plenty of time to explore the surroundings and do a few activities.
