Ghana offers many teaching opportunities for licensed teachers and English teachers. Apart from teaching jobs, Ghana allows ex-pat teachers to immerse in the culture and explore the noisy and historic streets of the capital, Accra. Although English is Ghana's official language, English teachers are still in high demand as the government works to improve students' overall English literacy skills. Ghana also has a few international schools that follow the American, British, or International Baccalaureate curriculum. These international schools hire licensed teachers from the United States or the United Kingdom. Teachers with advanced degrees can also apply for positions at universities in Ghana across various fields. While most English teaching jobs are offered on a volunteer basis, teachers who opt to teach at international schools can earn a monthly salary of $500, which may cover the cost of living in Ghana. Some international schools in Ghana also provide housing as an added benefit. The academic year in Ghana runs from August or September to June or July. Schools typically post vacancies in May and sometimes in January.
