How to Work Abroad in the Czech Republic
Prepare for Jobs in the Czech Republic
Set goals
Landing a job abroad isn’t just about sending out resumes. It starts much earlier with getting clear on a few key things.
- Visualize your day-to-day. What kind of routine are you hoping for? Maybe you want to bike to a quiet office in Brno or take client calls from a cafe in Olomouc. Picture it clearly so you can target the right kind of roles.
- Know your non-negotiables. Do you need flexible hours? Is working in English a must? Are you hoping to leave weekends free for travel? Writing out your essentials will help you skip over jobs that don’t serve your bigger plan.
- Check what’s realistic. Some jobs don’t sponsor visas. Some industries expect Czech fluency. And salaries vary a lot depending on the role. Spend a little time upfront researching these details so you’re not caught off guard later.
Understand the benefits
The Czech Republic isn’t just affordable beer and fairytale architecture (though yes, that’s a big plus). Working here comes with some real perks.
- Cost of living is reasonable. Prague has gotten pricier in recent years, but compared to Western Europe, it’s still budget-friendly. Rent, transit, groceries. They won’t eat up your paycheck.
- Work-life balance matters. The 9 to 5 is alive and well, but there’s a big focus on downtime. Expect four to five weeks of paid vacation annually and a culture that doesn’t glorify burnout.
- EU access. Once you’re based here, hopping to Vienna, Berlin or Kraków for the weekend is not just doable. It’s easy. You’re right in the center of Europe.
Things to know
Here’s where things get real. These details will help you avoid surprises:
- Salary – Wages vary a lot by field. Entry-level teaching jobs pay around $1,000–$1,400/month. Tech roles or international companies often pay much more, especially if you're hired from abroad.
- Cost of living – In Prague, rent for a room in a shared flat is about $400–$700/month. Outside the capital, it can be half that. Public transport is cheap, and local food spots are very wallet-friendly.
- Currency – The local money in the Czech Republic is the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro. You’ll get used to calculating conversions pretty quickly. Most places take cards, but always carry a bit of cash.
