A Guide to Working Abroad in Dominica
Best Cities for Expats
Before you head off to paradise to work abroad in Dominica, have a read of this guide to working in Dominica…
Roseau. The capital of Dominica, Roseau, is framed by lush peaks, and an eccentric jumble of West Indian, modern, and inventive buildings. The city is known for its Rastafarian vibe and amazing culinary scene. This is where most English academics are based if you want to teach English in Dominica, and many of the tourism organizations are. Learn about the islands vibrant history through the museum, head to Morne Bruce for panoramic views, or eat your way through the Old Market.
Portsmouth. In the north of the island are a cluster of dive resorts and marine research organisations. This town is small, but with a relatively large medical university situated within, it is mainly made up of students which means there is a thriving bar and nightlight scene and plenty of amenities.
Resorts. The resorts are spread through the island, but as Dominica is only 29 miles long, even if you resort seems isolated, it really isn’t! Different resorts have different environment: beaches, rainforest, or volcanoes. There is a wide range of options with 5* to camping.
Popular Job Types
Working abroad in Dominica is an incredible opportunity to expand your horizons. Here are the most popular ways to find work in Dominica according to our meaningful travel community.
English Teaching. Teaching English is the most common job in Dominica, with jobs available all year round. There is a huge demand for English from locals and internationals, and there are not many places where you can walk from your office to the beach on your lunch break. Job contracts are normally long term.
Resorts. Dominica is a popular getaway which means there are plenty of jobs to be found in resorts. Whether you feel like the kitchen, child care, or beauty salon is your domain, there will be a job abroad in Dominica for you. There are both short and long term job contracts available.
Marine. Dominica is known for its untouched and unbleached coral, which means the island is buzzing with divers. Whether you are an instructor or a marine conservationist, there are plenty of opportunities to work abroad in Dominica and spend your days spotting rays and turtles.
Estimated Salaries
The Caribbean is not known for being a cheap destination, and although Dominica is not cheap, it is not nearly as expensive as more popular locations for working abroad in the Caribbean such as Jamaica or Barbados. Wages in Dominica take into consideration living costs of the island; though don’t expect to be saving lots. Working abroad in Dominica does mean you will have to give up some of your comfort food, as imported food has a high tax so those Chips Ahoy! won’t be calling quite so loud. Unfortunately, most food is imported to the island.
Accommodations & Visas
There is not a wide range of accommodation options on the island, so jobs in Dominica often come with accommodation provided and this is considered an extra perk to the job. The standards vary so ask your employer questions before you agree to anything. Homestays may also be an option, which means you can dine on the wonderful cuisine every night while being immersed in a new family and culture.
The relaxed Caribbean attitude also reflects visas for Dominica. Many countries have three or six month visas on arrival, and for the rest you have 21 days if you have proof of onward travel (no excuse for the relatives not to visit!). Working visas are also similar, most people get a six-month visa once you have a contract and that can easily be renewed. If you do need to go to a Dominica embassy, then be aware that not many countries have an embassy, so you may be required to travel abroad. Most visas issues can be sorted on arrival.
