A Guide to Working Abroad in Gibraltar
Best Cities for Expats
Home to around 30,000 people and increasingly running tight on space, there won’t have too many locations to choose from for expats in Gibraltar. On the bright side, you will be familiar with the territory quite quickly.
North District. Head to the north district where you will find shops, restaurants, hospitals, residential areas, and “the Rock”! More on that below. The north district will contain many of the professional, retail, and tourism jobs you may be looking for.
The Rock. Made out of jurassic limestone over 200 million years old, the Rock is also known as the Pillars of Hercules. Why? Because it's impressive, draws a large number of tourists annually, and is a part of a nature reserve. “The Rock” has underground tunnels (from World War II) the Moorish Castle, a variety of wildlife, a cable car to ride, and climbing for the adventurous. All of which draw jobs and tourists looking to work in Gibraltar every day.
The Town. You may have guessed that the town area has lots of residential homes, schools, and the basic necessities you’d find in most towns. Perhaps you can find a place to live here. It’s also on the coast (as is most of the territory).
Estimated Salaries
Gibraltar isn’t super expensive, nor is it dirt cheap to live in. Expect salaries to be on par or a bit lower than those in the UK. Goods such as groceries, household items, and clothing can be more expensive in Gibraltar, simply because some goods are more difficult to export to such a small local. Also, remember that jobs can be competitive. With so little space and plenty of locals vying for jobs, you may find patience to be key.
Accommodations & Visas
Accommodations may be expensive for expats looking to work in Gibraltar due to space. Some workers opt to live across the border in Spain; still in close proximity with Gibraltar. It is fairly easy to get across the border into Spain, but with news of Brexit and other legal changes, it’s even more important to do research and read up on how realistic it might be to live across the border. If you’d rather stay in Gibraltar limits, expect to live in a small apartment or house.
British citizens, you’re in luck. A visa isn’t necessary for you since Gibraltar is a British territory—you can even get treated at Gibraltar hospitals. For everyone else, you will have to do some research about visa requirements for working in Gibraltar. For most European citizens and U.S. Citizens, just a passport will be needed, but it is important to do some research to understand what you need. Start this process early so that you have plenty of time to meet the application requirements if necessary. For more specific info, check out GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory.
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop
The economy has a few main sectors going for it. First, as you may have guessed, tourism. Everyone wants to see that rock, don’t ya know! Gibraltar also has a cruise ship terminal, which boosts tourism stats. If a professional job in Gibraltar is more your style, there are a number of banks providing a job for those seeking financial experience.
If you’re looking for a short-term job, Gibraltar has more opportunities in the summer months. With its warm climate, the tourists keep the place lively and more exciting than the off-season. If you’re up for a short adventure, a summer employment stint in Gibraltar might suit you well. Your experience working in Gibraltar will add international experience to your resume, no matter how long or short you stay.
Safety in Gibraltar. As a developed territory, Gibraltar is generally a pretty safe place to settle. It’s definitely small enough to manage crime rates and provide a safe environment for its citizens. Gibraltarians are fortunate to be in the hands of the Royal Gibraltar Police Force (fancy sounding, right?) And fun fact - it’s the oldest British force outside of the UK.
So, are you feeling the pull of “the Rock”? Working in Gibraltar can be the right leap for you! Just make sure to do your research and make sure the move in financially viable. In no time, you could be calling “the Rock” your home.
