How to Work Abroad in North America
Overview
Prepare for Jobs in North America
Set goals
North America is a land of ambition, but without a personal game plan, it’s easy to get swept into someone else’s.
- Choose your lifestyle. Think about the life you want around your job. Are you okay with a long commute for a big-city paycheck, or do you want a smaller city with lower costs and more time outside of work?
- Pick one career habit to build. Start small. Maybe it’s checking job boards every Monday, sending one follow-up a week, or blocking time to update your resume. Consistency beats intensity.
- Plan your first 30 days. Set one goal for your first month. It could be opening a local bank account or joining a coworking space. These kinds of wins keep your momentum going.
Understand the benefits
This region can be fast-paced and competitive, but working here opens a lot of doors. Depending on where you land, the benefits go far beyond just gaining experience.
- Strong salaries and benefits. Many jobs in the US and Canada come with solid pay, health coverage, paid leave, and chances for bonuses or advancement.
- Professional development. Companies often invest in training, upskilling, and internal promotions, giving you space to grow without changing employers.
- Cultural exposure. Daily life on the job gives you insight into how North Americans work, socialize, and solve problems. It’s a perspective you won’t get just by visiting.
Locations
Choose a Location
You’re not just picking a job. You’re choosing where your everyday life will happen. Coffee shops, commutes, coworkers, and weekends all depend on the place you land.
Canada
Canada offers a stable economy, progressive values, and a strong sense of community. It’s ideal for roles in health care, education, tech, and government. Knowing French can be a bonus, especially if you’re eyeing work in Quebec.
United States
The US is competitive but packed with opportunity across nearly every industry. Major cities are fast-paced and full of professional networks and upward mobility. It’s a strong fit for those who thrive in dynamic work environments.
Mexico
Mexico brings energy, cultural depth, and a growing economy. Jobs in tourism, language education, and business are especially common. Spanish fluency helps, and the lower cost of living appeals to many expats.
Fields
Choose a Field
There’s no shortage of career paths to explore in North America, and the right field depends on your skills, goals, and how you want to grow.
Computer Science & Information Systems
Software engineers are in high demand across startups, large tech firms, and every industry in between. They design and build the digital tools and systems that keep modern life running. With flexible schedules, high salaries, and room to grow, it’s one of the most future-proof careers out there.
Nursing
Registered nurses play a critical role in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities throughout North America. It’s a hands-on, people-focused job that comes with strong job security and a clear path for advancement. If you want a meaningful career that’s always needed, nursing is a reliable option.
Marketing, Advertising, & PR
Digital marketing specialists help brands connect with the right audience through social media, content, ads, and email campaigns. It’s a creative yet strategic role that mixes storytelling with analytics. For those who love big ideas and fast results, this field is packed with opportunity.
Getting Started
Tips & Advice
Relocating for a job can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you feel more in control.
1. Get matched
Start by using the GoAbroad Online Advisor to discover job programs that align with your background and interests. It’s a smart shortcut to narrow your options.
2. Choose a program
Set up a MyGoAbroad account to compare programs side by side in one place, without having to track every detail on your own.
3. Funding & scholarships
Thinking about working in another country is a big step, especially when you factor in the costs. To lighten the load, you can fill out the GoAbroad Scholarships & Deals application to help cover program fees or moving expenses. You can also use FundMyTravel to help you crowdfund your journey and get support from your network.
4. Apply
Once a job stands out to you, click “Apply Now” or “Inquire Here” to reach the program provider and get the process started.
5. Get your essentials
Handle the essentials before you board your flight:
- Visa - Each country has its own rules, so apply early and follow the steps carefully.
- Flight - Booking early usually means better prices and more options, especially if you're flying during busy seasons.
- Travel Insurance - Make sure you’re covered for emergencies, health care, and the unexpected.
- Accommodation - Some jobs offer housing. If not, find something flexible for your first few weeks so you can explore neighborhoods once you arrive.
Starting a job in North America is a big move, but it’s also a chance to build something new. With a little prep and the right tools, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running.

A dream come true- Thanks to Ashley and the rest of the InterExchange team
August 05, 2026by: Zoe Gatti - United StatesProgram: Work and Travel Canada
The IEC Working Holidays process can be daunting when you are first researching it. Ashley Ragus and the rest of the team at InterExchange made the whole process so seamless and easy to understand, from start to finish. Ashley is so supportive, kind, and extremely communicative. We met with her a number of times and she and the rest of the team guided us through every step of the process so we never felt confused. The instructions that InterExchange provided were super clear and easy to follow. Deadlines and triple-checking everything in your application is super important. It's also important to take all of pre-border crossing prep work seriously, and do it right – you will thank yourself later. It's been a dream of ours for a long time to live and work in Canada, and it feels surreal to be experiencing that now - thanks to InterExchange. I highly recommend InterExchange – 10/10 experience. Thank you Ashley and team!

My journey through the Rocky Mountains has been absolutely unforgettable. Being surrounded by towering peaks, endless forests, and fresh mountain air every single day feels unreal. The landscapes are breathtaking and constantly remind me how powerful and beautiful nature can be. Working at a ski resort makes the experience even better. I spend my days in the mountains, meet people from all over the world, and enjoy a job that never feels boring. The mix of outdoor work, great teamwork, and unforgettable ski days has made this adventure one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life.
Ashley from InterExchange is awesome!!
January 29, 2026by: Caleb Cammarata - United StatesProgram: Work and Travel Canada
When I first looked into acquiring a IEC Working Holiday visa I as admittedly a little overwhelmed by what seemed like an overload of information and documentation that would be required from me in order to successfully immigrate in Canada. From the very first time we spoke, Ashley Ragus made what felt like a very daunting process at the start feel incredibly seamless and simple by the end. I am so appreciative for her support along the way, and I am looking forward to working with her again when I reapply for 2027. Thanks for everything Ashley, you rock!
Greatest Winter Season
January 08, 2026by: Loreen Jantzen - GermanyProgram: Pre-arranged Jobs in Canadian Summer and Winter Resorts
My time here in Canada is wonderful, I got interviewed by Internex Pacific to work in Hospitality at a Ski Resort, so I always meet new people. As a Restaurantspecialist with experience on a cruiseship, I already saw much of the world, but I can for sure say Canada is one of my favourite places also because of the people living here. Living here in Invermere at a Lakehouse is awesome, because the owner are really friendly and we have much space around the house.

I didn't expect to find what I found
October 03, 2025by: Matthew Malecha - United StatesProgram: California Summer Camp - Find Magic & Meaning at Augusta
When I first went to Camp Augusta as a counselor at 22 years old, I had already worked at three other summer camps and traveled abroad to two other countries. I was anticipating it to be a familiar run-of-the-mill summer camp, having a good time, and then moving on with my life. Within a month of being there, I knew that this place was different. The games, the people, the activities, the opportunities for growth, the connection with nature, the mission, and the philosophies. It seemed like every day was full of challenges, but also full of so much meaning and reward. I knew that although it was the hardest job I had ever had, I had grown so much in my first summer and needed to come back. Since then, I have returned to many summers and many roles in Augusta. No two summers are the same. Each has its own challenges and growth that have been foundational for my growth at and with Augusta. Despite the hard work and long hours, I look back with gratitude at the impact that Augusta has had on my life personally and my relationships - in Augusta and outside. It's a life changing place for all who tread on those woodchips. :)

Becoming a ski instructor was the best!
December 16, 2023by: Ben Woolhouse - United KingdomProgram: Become a qualified ski instructor & teach in the same season
My time as a ski instructor for children was nothing short of amazing, as it proved to be a transformative journey both personally and professionally. Guiding young enthusiasts through the thrilling world of skiing was not just a job but a joyous adventure filled with laughter, excitement, and boundless energy. Witnessing the sheer delight on the faces of children as they conquered the slopes and developed a love for the sport was incredibly rewarding. As I dedicated myself to imparting not only skiing skills but also fostering a sense of confidence and camaraderie among the kids, I found my own passion for teaching flourishing. The experience was further elevated by the fact that I successfully my CSIA level 2 during this time. Each day on the slopes was a testament to the power of shared enthusiasm and the profound impact that positive mentorship can have on young minds, making my time as a ski instructor an unforgettable chapter in my life.

Brilliant experience!
December 14, 2023by: Islay Smith - United KingdomProgram: Become a Ski Instructor in Canada - Training + Job Included
I travelled to Canada with EA to work in Vancouver as a snowboard instructor in 2019. They were so helpful and brilliant with assisting organisation. Accommodation was good as everyone was together in a block of apartments so it created a great sense of community. We received really good training prior to the exams required to become an instructor, and everyone on the mountain was so accepting and helpful and kind! I would definitely recommend doing this if you’re even vaguely thinking about it, and I’d absolutely love to do it again if I had the time!
Dear Islay, your recommendation means a lot to us, and we appreciate your encouragement for other aspiring instructors. Should you ever find the time for another adventure, we'd be thrilled to have you back! Thank you for being a part of the EA community. -The EA Team

September 18, 2023by: Kailey Moser - United StatesProgram: Work and Travel Canada
I had a fantastic experience! All of my questions were answered quickly and thoroughly. The whole team made an overwhelming process very smooth and manageable. The helpful team was absolutely the highlight of the program for sure. I went through the process to live and work in Canada from the United States. I was able to move to a town that I had already been to and had connections in the community. I didn't utilize any of the housing resources but it was nice to know that it was an option.I would highly recommend!
