A Guide to Working Online
Working Remotely vs. Abroad
There are some essential differences between working remotely rather than in an office or on-site abroad. Depending on your work style, these differences are absolutely crucial in deciding if remote work is right for you:
Flexibility. Remote jobs abroad suit every type of schedule. Whether you enjoy the 9-to-5 routine, or prefer something with a later clock-in time, online jobs tend to have flexible work schedules. Some companies will still require you to be on-the-clock at certain hours of the day (especially if it’s something that’s client-facing), but for the most part, there’s an added component of freedom with remote work.
Focus. Say goodbye to whirring printers, crosstalk, and cranked air conditioning. Remote job opportunities have less face-to-face contact, but definitely provide a refuge from workplace distractions. However, it’s worth noting that there will be unique distractions to deal with if you work from home too—piles of laundry, dirty dishes, and barking dogs to name a few. So, be sure to assess which environment is the most potentially productive for you!
Networking. Speaking of a lack of face-to-face communication, it can be difficult to network as a remote worker. It’ll be necessary to take initiative to set up meetings and reach out to coworkers and supervisors in order to keep communication channels open. Without all that water cooler talk, you may feel more peaceful and happy—but you don’t want to miss out on all that positive communication that happens in the workplace, too!
Popular Types of Remote Jobs
Certain job fields have easily made the jump to virtual work opportunities. If you don’t know where to start looking, keep in mind that if it’s a job that involves a computer in some way, you can probably do it remotely.
Teaching English. Teaching English online has been growing in popularity for quite a while now. It’s a fantastic opportunity for cultural exchange while building a career in a rather lucrative field. Plus, you can’t argue with the job security, considering hundreds of thousands of students around the world want to learn English every year.
Marketing. Many companies have switched to remote marketing teams. That means if you have skills in writing, social media, or video editing, there are more job opportunities online for you now than ever before.
Computer Science. Web developers, software engineers, graphic designers, and all sorts of tech-savvy professionals will find a plethora of online job opportunities. Many companies hire freelancers for one-off programming jobs, so having computer science skills will easily find you remote work.
Administrative. There are many virtual jobs in the administrative field as well, from data entry to virtual assistants. Fancy yourself a self-motivated customer service professional? Then there’s surely an opportunity out there for you!
Essential Tips for Working Remotely
Have a space dedicated to work. Transitioning to working remotely after only ever working in an office setting can be difficult, and leave you feeling lost or disorganized. The first step to working remotely is to have a dedicated workplace that makes you feel productive, in order to keep the lines between “home” and “work” as defined as possible.
Keep a schedule. If your company doesn’t require a set schedule, do not fall into the trap of procrastination and odd work hours. Stay productive by still setting a schedule for each day, even if it’s a non-traditional one. No one said you can’t work for four hours in the morning and four hours in the evening!

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a remote job?
A remote job involves working outside of the office and even from another country. Employers place an emphasis on candidates who can successfully complete their daily tasks and responsibilities. These past years, since the COVID-19 outbreak, remote job opportunities have increased in popularity and demand.
How can I find remote jobs?
The best way to find remote jobs is to do it online for a more targeted search. Specialized websites or platforms provide comprehensive listings of remote work opportunities from different organizations and companies around the globe.
Which country is best for remote jobs?
A lot of countries are perfect for remote work! Head to Italy and Thailand if you’re seeking a combination of sun, sea, and rich cultural heritage. Mexico and Egypt offer historic tours on the side, after completing your tasks for the day. Japan and South Korea are ideal destinations if you prefer a blend of ancient and modern.
Can you work online with no experience?
Yes! If you want to work remotely but have no previous experience, choose online jobs that match your knowledge and skills. Some employers conduct trainings or orientation to give you an idea of how the tasks are done.
