Any large city in the United States will do when it comes to business careers. There are many smaller, more rural towns that will also have job opportunities, but the more professional, larger companies are generally located in cities. Do you have a particular company you want to look for? Visit their website and sign up for job alerts or call their HR office to get the down-low on opportunities. 

New York City. What aspiring business student doesn’t dream of moving to New York city? While the business opportunities are galore, it is also a very expensive city to move to. However, if the lifestyle of a big city and the diverse food and people are what you are after, then plan carefully and make the leap. 

Chicago, IL. Known as the windy city and home to the hearty deep dish pizza, Chicago is another ideal place to launch a business career. With many top companies making Chicago their headquarters, you can find plenty of internships and entry-level jobs while living more affordably. 

Seattle, WA. If you’re looking to live on the west coast where companies such as Starbucks and Costco rule, then head to Seattle. Known for their coffee, frequent rain, and fresh seafood, Seattle also has some great business opportunities. Don’t let the rain stop you from checking out this blossoming business city!

Cost of living + expected salary. The United States is big...and diverse. Therefore, the cost of living is going to depend on where you settle. However, expect many internships to be unpaid. Paid ones are out there, but they often require some strong networking skills and a business-savvy personality or specialized skill set. If you already have experience in a certain field, research the income for that job in the U.S. to gain some insight. 

Accommodations. Affording housing in a city in the U.S. can be costly, especially if you want to live in the heart of the city. If this is the case, check out Craigslist, the most popular website used to post listings for shared apartments or houses. If you don’t mind more of a drive and can afford a car, living in the suburbs will be cheaper in most cases. 

Visas. Obtaining a visa to work in the United States can be a long process. It is usually much easier if you already have a job set up with a company and their HR team can do much of the paperwork for you. However, if you want to make the jump on your own, visit the U.S. Department of State website to apply for a visa. 

Safety. There are safety concerns in large cities in the U.S. Generally, certain areas of a city will have reputations if they are safe or not. When looking for housing, don’t jump at the cheapest option, because this could also mean living in an area that is not as safe. The best thing to do is research before deciding where to live.

For most business jobs in the United States, a resume is just the first step to getting your foot in the door. If you want to stand out, you will need a polished resume, cover-letter, AND a successful interview. Interviews are often multi-layered with an initial phone interview and then a Skype or in-person interview. 

Network! Network! Network! Business Jobs in America are big on networking. If you have a connection or can speak well to your skills, you will have a leg up on the competition. Practice your elevator speech (and if you don’t know what this is, Google it). A confident and extroverted (yet professional), persona can get you far when looking for business jobs in the United States.
