A Guide to Marketing, Advertising, & PR Jobs Abroad in the United States
Locations
If there’s something you want to do in the U.S., there is an environment to support it. Most marketing and PR jobs in the US will be in major cities, but with every region boasting a different lifestyle it’s important to research what place will best support you.
San Francisco. In this foggy and iconic Californian city, start-ups are the norm, not the exception. And start-ups are in dire need of effective public relations. Because so much of their energy is poured into their product or service, they often lack the time and energy to create the buzz they need to get noticed. That’s where you come in! In your free time join the trendy crowd in dining out, dressing up, and getting down at festivals, concerts, and the fun cultural events San Fran is known for.
New York. If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere… so says Frank Sinatra and it’s hard to disagree. Work abroad in the US in Marketing & PR in the city that defines edge. New York is tough, but it’s also immensely rewarding and can put you to the top of your field. Many of the world’s top companies have offices in New York, and all of them want the glitz and notoriety of a showstopper on Broadway. Advertising is perhaps at its height in the flashy billboards of Time Square, and there’s no better place to be tested, inspired, challenged, and rewarded than New York City.
Washington D.C. The nation’s capital is quite rightly known for its political powerhouses. But the city is full of so much more. Museums, non-profits, hotels, and other organizations that cater to politicians and their visitors are in constant need of good press… as are politicians themselves. There is ample work for PR mavens and abounding opportunities to relax and have fun.
Everything else you need to know
Getting a Marketing and PR job in the United States might feel like Thelma and Louise driving off a cliff. But with careful planning, the transition can be a smooth one and you’ll be fully prepared to leap into your own American dream.
Cost of living. The USA is a huuuge country… and each region is as diverse economically as it is culturally, socially, and gastronomically. Cities like New York and L.A. cost astronomically more to live in than smaller ones like Boston or Buffalo, and certainly more than the many small towns that give each state its character. It’s important to research the place you’re going and make sure you have realistic expectations about cost of living, standard of living, and how much you can earn. To help get your funds started, consider listing your American adventure on FundMyTravel and watch the cash flow in!
Accommodations. City jobs will often help set you up in apartments when you find Marketing & PR jobs for foreigners in the US. This is convenient as you can be right in the middle of the hustle and bustle, but have your own private space that gives you a life outside work. Occasionally there might be a dorm situation, but this will rare. You might get a shared house if you’re living in the suburbs or small town, or if you’re bringing your family along and make according arrangements.
Visas. The US is notoriously difficult to get a visa from-- but it’s not impossible! The key is to have an employer set up and ready to sponsor you. They will then apply for a petition, and once approved, you can send in your application and be granted either a work visa, permit, or Green Card. Because different countries have different requirements, be sure to check the Embassy Directory for updated and country-specific information.
Safety. America is a nation of genuinely friendly, open people. That being said, the same rules apply here as anywhere-- watch your things, try not to be out alone at night in big cities unless you know the neighborhood well, and try to let people know where you are if you’re venturing anywhere new. Americans are genuinely happy to show you around and include you in their friend group, and most will look out for you as if they’ve known you for years, not weeks!

You’ll get experience with some of the most innovative companies in the world, and your resume will shine with a job abroad in Marketing in America.
People often don’t realize just how big America is before they get here- the state of California alone is as big as the entire country of Italy! It takes four to five days to drive coast to coast without stopping for sights, and flights take up to six hours. Be sure to see as much as you can before you leave, but plan enough time! It’s hard to choose between mountains, deserts, forests, and beaches, but it’s worth seeing as much as you can.
