How to Work Abroad in Brisbane
Overview
Prepare for Jobs Abroad
Set goals
You’ll be working in a new city, and maybe even a new field, so it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at first. Setting goals can help you stay focused and make the most of your time. While your goals will depend on your own reasons for being here, here are a few ideas to get started:
- Get familiar with how Aussie workplaces function. Pay attention to things like communication styles, job expectations, and office culture.
- Pursue jobs that align with your long-term goals, whether it’s building your resume or testing out a new industry like tourism or tech.
- Make space for life outside of work. Brisbane’s pace makes it easy to earn money and still enjoy the river, parks, and weekend trips.
Understand the benefits
Working in Brisbane offers way more than just a paycheck. It’s a chance to grow professionally, experience life in one of Australia’s most laid-back cities, and still build serious career momentum.
- Work-life balance: Brisbane is known for its relaxed pace. You’ll have time to explore riverfront parks, head to the beach on weekends, or catch live music after work.
- Job variety: From tourism to tech, Brisbane has job options for different experience levels and interests. Short-term roles are easy to find, and longer-term career tracks are possible too.
- Professional growth: Working in Australia gives your resume a global edge. You’ll learn how to navigate new systems, collaborate across cultures, and build skills that stick.
Things to know
Brisbane is a great place to live and work, but there are a few practical things to keep in mind before you go:
- Job types - Short-term roles like bartending or au pairing are easy to land on a working holiday visa. Long-term roles may require sponsorship and patience with paperwork.
- Cost of living - Brisbane is more affordable than Sydney or Melbourne, but you’ll still want to budget carefully, especially for rent and transport.
- Getting around - Brisbane’s public transport system (buses, ferries, and trains) is efficient and easy to use. A Go Card will save you money on rides.
- Work culture - Expect a casual but respectful vibe. Aussies value direct communication, good banter, and showing up on time.
Housing - Shared apartments are common for new arrivals. Inner suburbs like West End, New Farm, or South Bank are popular and well-connected.
Fields
Choose a Field
Brisbane offers a variety of job options for international workers. Whether you're looking for something short-term and flexible or planning to build a long-term career, there are several popular fields you can consider.
Tourism
Brisbane’s tourism industry is active year-round. Tour guide positions and other customer-facing roles are easy to find on a temporary visa. It’s a great way to meet travelers, gain work experience, and explore the city while earning money.
Hospitality
Restaurants, cafes, and hotels are always hiring. Jobs like bartender, barista, or kitchen assistant offer flexible hours and are perfect for working holiday makers or anyone looking for casual employment in a fast-paced setting.
Agriculture
Seasonal farm work is common in the areas around Brisbane. Jobs like fruit picking, packing, and general farmhand work are ideal for working holiday visa holders. It’s physically demanding, but a great way to earn money and extend your stay in Australia.

Unforgettable experience with Global Work & Travel
June 11, 2026by: Brandon - - United KingdomI had an unforgettable experience with global work & travel on this trip, and my Trip Coordinator Shona was truly exceptional. They took care of every detail, from logistics to local insights, making sure each day was seamless and exciting. Their knowledge of the area was impressive, and they shared hidden gems that we would have never discovered on our own. What really stood out was how they handled unexpected situations with ease, always staying one step ahead and making sure we felt comfortable and supported. They communicated clearly, so we always knew what to expect, and their enthusiasm made the whole experience feel that much more special. Thanks to Shona, I could fully relax and enjoy the adventure without any stress. Highly recommend for anyone looking to make the most out of their travels with expert guidance! Will definitely be back in the future.
My trip has been absolutely excellent so far
June 11, 2026by: Jarret - - CanadaMy trip has been absolutely excellent so far. I arrived on the 19th of February in Sydney and am living in Glenmore Park. A few days after exploring the place and seeing what is around me I went to a concert that was amazing. After that I went to a place called Forster and got to see the beach and the ocean surrounding it. I got to go on a boat and do some fishing while seeing all the wildlife around including pelicans, dolphins and a lot of different kind of fish and sea life. After all the exploring I went back to Penrith and met some of my partners family and friends who were all so nice to me. They explained the culture a little bit more, and a lot of them are rugby (footy?) fans and introduced me to the game which I found really fascinating because I love sports and learning the game. Now that I've settled in and seen what's around I am looking for jobs around the area. My next goal here is to figure out the bus and train systems so that I can get myself around. Another goal I have is to make some friends in my free time and get some insight on the hidden gems of the area. I'd really like to go for some hikes to see more of all the natural beauty of the area. I'm so happy about how warm it is here and not having any snow around me makes me so happy. I do miss my family back home and with the time difference its hard to catch them when they are available but its been nice to have a different family atmosphere to be around that is so warm and welcoming. I do feel a little out of my comfort zone being in a place that is so different from where I come from, but each day that I am here it gets better and better. I'd like to thank Shona for being there if I have any questions or concerns and keeping in contact with insights and tips. It's very much appreciated with everything this journey has come with. I feel like I'm in safe and good hands and would recommend her to anyone who wants a fantastic experience with Global!
Experience of A Lifetime
June 11, 2026by: Phill - - United StatesThis trip has truly been the experience of a lifetime, and it has been made so much easier by Asti and other people at global work and travel who have assisted me. Asti has helped me book day trips, hostels, and provided me with a great job match before I even arrived in Australia!
Incredible Experience so far..
June 11, 2026by: Jack - - United StatesI've been delighted with my experience, working with Global has made my experience amazing and given me peace of mind that all will go smoothly and if not, I've got assistance if needed! Asti, my arrival coordinator, has been most helpful and checked in multiple times even since my arrival to make sure that all is going well. My only feedback would be that I think that orientation should be in person, with other Global travellers in the area - it was difficult to network with others travelling with the same company over messaging only, and the 2 people I managed to find agreed that they thought orientation was in person 😅. Overall, an incredible experience so far, and thank you for your help finding me a suitable role and supporting me at every stage.

Highly Recommended Program with Global Work & Travel
June 11, 2026by: Erin - - United StatesCould not recommend enough! Since day 1, Charlie, David and Hannah have all been so kind and informative. They have all helped me to book and arrange everything, this is my first time travelling so I had alot of silly questions that they answered as best they could and I could not be more thankful. Hannah has checked in every step of the way and been so reassuring and helpful since arriving. I would not be out in Australia loving life if it wasn't for them all
Life-Changing Experience in Australia with Global Work & Travel
June 11, 2026by: Joe - - United KingdomPlanning a life changing event like working and living abroad doesn't come without a mountain of tasks, unseen hurdles and life admin I really wasn't ready for... Luckily the stress was pretty much evaporated by the team at Global who made the process a breeze, guiding through the stages of booking, planning and all the admin you wouldn't think about until I landed... Flights. Visa. Phone Sim. First Hostel, and probably most reassuring of all - a job when you've stepped off the plane. They handle it absolutely perfectly, pre trip nerves ? Squashed with constant check ins for concerns and changes of your plans ! Nothing is too much trouble for the team at Global, who guide you through the whole journey from concept to landing on the tarmac Down under - with continued support after you've settled to really keep you reassured. I would highly recommend Global based on my experience with them, be it for a working holiday, excursion tour or any of their services! What makes it so much more tangible is the team there have had their own travelling experiences and handle your booking on a human level, really hyping you up in the build up and putting any worries at ease. My trip In particular was handled flawlessly by Myles, David and Asti. Who I highly commend from taking me out of a nowhere job bored in the UK to living the dream down under in Melbourne !
Outstanding Support and Smooth Settlement in Australia
June 11, 2026by: Caitlin - - CanadaAsti and the rest of the Global team have been nothing but amazing when helping me get prepared and settled into my accommodations and work place in Australia. They set everything up for me prior to my arrival which made me feel at ease when arriving. I would highly recommend using any of their services when booking any sort of trip with the company and also highly recommend having Asti as a travel coordinator as she has been nothing but sweet, understanding, and respectful while assisting me throughout this process!

Smooth Arrival and Stunning First Impressions of Melbourne Nightlife
June 11, 2026by: Keaton H - United KingdomFirst and foremost my trip has barely started im only 3 weeks in but I have really enjoyed the nightlife in Melbourne and just how sublime the city appears at night with breath taking views. My travel coordinator made it simple for me to be able to land in Australia and not have to worry about taxi, or Ubers to get to my accommodation and also helping me with multiple job opportunities, before I arrived in Australia communication was very immediate to ensure my trip was as smooth as possible.
Best trip ever!
March 01, 2023by: Scott Hamber - EnglandMade is so easy, I went with Global back in 2019 and i'm still currently here. Great company as they got my foot in the door, had a job as a bartender in a resort/casino that included staff accommodation which was set up before I left, which made it easier for me and my piece of mind, which allowed me to save and start meeting like minded travellers. They helped with the visa and flights and every time I had a question or concerns they called and helped me. Had such a great experience which is why i'm still here 4 years later.
