A Guide to Jobs Abroad in Georgia
Locations
As you begin your search for places to work in Georgia, there are several locations that have opportunities for TEFL certifications and paid opportunities to teach English. Each have quirks that will allow for very different experiences with Georgia jobs for foreigners working abroad—from the coast, to the valleys of the mountains, to the capital itself. You have the ability to customize your experience based on your interests (and also your desires for pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone).
Tbilisi. As the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi has developed into the 21st century with a media-worthy nightlife scene (including clubs that host international DJs), a move towards becoming a more walkable city with new cafes and restaurants, and a variety of museums, galleries, and parks. However, Old Tbilisi is still alive and thriving. The combination of old and new gives you many opportunities to learn of Georgia’s history, and also experience their modern way of life. Working in Georgia will be a pleasure in Tbilisi with its ancient and modern influences.
Chiatura. Very different than Tbilisi, Chiatura is a slower-paced small town in the valleys of the surrounding mountains. One of the main forms of public transport are the town’s rusty, old cable cars that almost rise out of the lower levels of the town at 90 degrees. The cars are unique to the history of Chiatura and their slower pace of life. If you choose to work in Georgia and want an experience of a small town with plenty of lasting Soviet influences, Chiatura is for you. It will be an experience filled with delicious homemade khachapuris from local bakeries.
Sukhumi. Along the coast of the Black Sea, Suhumi has seen destruction through war in the 90s, and also efforts for rebuilding. Up and coming burger joints are accompanied by traditional restaurants near the waterfront. Local wines and beers are popular refreshments, especially in the summer warmth. As a city working towards growth and redevelopment, teaching English to its residents may give them the tools to channel a new beginning.
Popular Job Types
As a country that is modernizing and rebuilding, you could have a direct impact on these movements through your own undertakings while working abroad in Georgia.
Education. Whether you are just graduating with a teaching degree, or looking to get your TEFL certification to teach abroad, Georgia has opportunities for you to use your skills and language knowledge inside the classroom. With hands-on interactions with the Georgian residents, you will build a special connection to this corner of the world. There’s nothing more beautiful than that, is there? Your efforts may help Georgians rebuild their own lives, or help to continue moving Georgia into the future; which is why education has great opportunities for Georgia jobs for foreigners.
Hospitality and Tourism. As with many countries around the world, there is a lot of work dedicated to receiving and embracing tourists which is why both of these are great for international jobs in Georgia. Not only is this a direct economic benefit for the host countries, but it also is a great way to encourage intercultural and language exchange. So beyond directly teaching English, you can use your English skills to help boost and foster tourism in Georgia.
