Overview
Prepare for Photography Jobs Abroad
Understand the benefits
Working abroad in photography teaches you things you don’t get from school or local gigs. It’s about learning to work smarter and with more intention.
- Figure it out as you go. You won’t always have ideal gear or conditions, so you’ll learn to troubleshoot fast and still get the shot.
- Learn what matters in a new place. People respond differently to being photographed. You’ll pick up how to read situations and build trust quickly.
- Build work that has weight. When you're documenting real stories or working with communities, your images have more behind them than just aesthetics. That shows in your portfolio.
Things to know
Doing photography work abroad comes with a mix of creative highs and unexpected curveballs. Being ready for the behind-the-scenes stuff makes the experience way smoother.
- Logistics - Getting gear through airports or into remote areas can be tricky, so plan for backups and delays.
- Expectations - Some assignments will be less creative and more client-driven, especially if you're working events or promotional content.
- Access - Not every place or subject is open to being photographed, and earning trust takes time and awareness.
Locations
Choose a Location
You can find photography gigs all over the world, but where you go should depend on your style, goals, and focus.
Japan
From Tokyo’s neon streets to Kyoto’s serene temples, Japan is full of contrast. It’s great for urban and street photographers looking for visual complexity and structure. Many creative agencies and tourism boards are open to collaborating with international artists.
England
England offers a mix of old-world architecture, modern design, and thriving editorial scenes. London is packed with opportunities in fashion, media, and events, while smaller cities and rural areas are perfect for documentary or lifestyle work.
Australia
From coastal cities to wide open landscapes, Australia gives photographers plenty to work with. There’s demand for tourism, surf, and environmental photography, and strong creative scenes in cities like Sydney and Melbourne.
Getting Started
Tips & Advice
Photography jobs abroad aren’t just for professionals with years of experience. If you’ve got curiosity, some solid skills, and a willingness to work with new people in new places, you’re more ready than you think.
1. Get matched
Instead of scrolling endlessly, try the GoAbroad Online Advisor. Plug in your interests, timeline, and destination ideas, and get a curated list of programs that actually fit what you're looking for.
2. Choose a program
When you start bookmarking programs, having a MyGoAbroad account makes comparing them way easier. You can track your favorites and revisit them without sorting through a messy browser history.
3. Funding & scholarships
Traveling for work or an internship can get pricey. Check out GoAbroad Scholarships & Deals, and if needed, set up a FundMyTravel campaign to crowdsource some support. Some roles even include meals or lodging, so look out for that too.
4. Apply
If a program catches your eye, click "Apply Now" or "Inquire Here" on the program listing. From there, you’ll be connected directly with the provider, who will guide you through the process.
5. Get your essentials
Before you book your ticket, make sure your passport and visa are good to go. You’ll also want to line up your flights, travel insurance, and housing well ahead of time so nothing sneaks up on you later.

The Perfect Start to My Australian Adventure – Highly Recommend!
February 17, 2025by: Sophie Laplane - United StatesProgram: Melbourne Gap Year: Paid Work Opportunities in Australia
Joining the Melbourne Gap Year tour with Grabatour was the best way to start my working holiday in Australia. From day one, everything was well-organized, and the team made sure we had all the essentials sorted—bank accounts, tax file numbers, SIM cards, and even job support. It took away all the stress of settling in and allowed me to focus on enjoying the experience. The itinerary was a perfect balance of practical help and exciting activities. We explored Melbourne’s vibrant laneways, visited St. Kilda Beach, and got to experience the city’s amazing food and coffee culture. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to help with anything we needed. One of the best parts of the tour was the people. I met an incredible group of fellow travelers, and the shared experiences made it easy to form friendships. Even after the tour ended, we stayed in touch and continued exploring Australia together. If you’re planning a working holiday in Australia, I highly recommend this tour. It gives you the perfect start, a great group of friends, and the confidence to begin your adventure the right way!
Excellent working holiday intro tour in Melbourne
February 17, 2025by: Alexandra Paul - United StatesProgram: Melbourne Gap Year: Paid Work Opportunities in Australia
I recently joined the Melbourne Gap Year tour with Grabatour, and it was hands down the perfect way to kick-start my Australian adventure! From the moment I arrived, everything was well-organized, making the transition into a new country smooth and stress-free. The itinerary was a great mix of practical support and fun experiences. The team helped us set up essentials like bank accounts, tax file numbers, and SIM cards, which saved me so much time and hassle. They also provided great advice on job hunting, which gave me a real head start in finding work. Beyond the practical stuff, the city tours were a highlight. We explored Melbourne’s famous laneways, checked out the street art, and visited St. Kilda Beach, all while learning about the city’s culture. There were also plenty of opportunities to socialize, and I met an amazing group of people from all over the world. The support from their local team didn’t stop when the tour ended—they were always there to help with any questions I had. If you’re looking for an exciting, hassle-free way to start your working holiday in Australia, I highly recommend this tour!

I spent one month doing an internship. All of the staff were really friendly and they gave me a lot of freedom and responsibilities in my tasks. The school is located in the best area of Bilbao and at a 30 min metro distance from the beach! Being part of a young, international and dynamic marketing team I am learning a lot more than just Spanish. Having a German supervisor makes things go as smooth as possible.

May 07, 2019by: Taylor Misiak - GermanyProgram: Melbourne Gap Year: Paid Work Opportunities in Australia
Having read all the reviews, we decided to join this program for our working holiday in Australia. We had such an amazing time in Melbourne and got to see so much of the city during the intro week. I appreciate all that is written in the positive reviews. Activities were great from the start. The other people who were going in our group was nice and friendly. They kept their word and that is very important. Additionally, they helped us out with all the Aussie admin stuff during the intro week and supported us with farm work opportunities in Queensland since we all wanted to do the 88 days regional work for the second year visa extension. Highly recommended!

Booking this paid work package was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I would recommend it to anyone. The week itself is definitely worth the money since we experienced many amazing activities such as wine tasting penguin spotting getaway trip etc.. and all the extra help especially employment help from the team is what makes this tour so unique. Everyone involved goes above and beyond to help support you and make you feel like home. I got my first job Down Under in Northern territory to extend my second year visa thank to the team. Much appreciated!!
The application process was fairly simple!
November 23, 2018by: Brooke Thatcher - AustraliaProgram: Jobs and internships in Spain
As there was always someone to inform me or for me to ask if I had any difficulties. Once I arrived to my destination, as they were already expecting me the process was smooth and I was shown where I would be staying and given a brief guide on where and what I would be doing. I greatly enjoyed my internship and the bar work exceeded my expectations. The work was enjoyable and very social as I was able to meet hundreds of people every day and there was events to make things more interesting. Initially I expected to do some basic cooking but much to my surprise as summer started there were fun weekly events such as the barbecue and paella evenings which were held outside on the terrace. As about the accommodation - the room was spacious and included sufficient space for all my belongings and alongside this included a table and some other shelves and drawers and a large floor space. The beds were clean and I was able to change my own sheets whenever I felt necessary. I have definitely achieved my goal which was to develop my Spanish speaking skills. At first I was unable to speak and on some occasions dealing with colleagues and customers proved difficult. But without a doubt I can say I had a fantastic summer and made some amazing friends who I have already planned to meet with again. My Spanish ability is considerably better as I feel confident to hold a conversation on a variety of topics and work in a Spanish speaking environment with minimal problems. The area itself was a beautiful place and on my days off I used the opportunity to visit the tourist sites, but also as I spoke and got to know local people, I discovered lesser known areas such as a nearby fishing spot only 20 minutes away from the city centre. All my expectations were satisfied and even more. The living conditions that the hotel offered us were very good and comfortable. I met people from all over the world and experiences and emotions were wonderful. The experience I gained there was very useful for my future and the profession I have been focusing on.

Fantastic experience in Spain
June 30, 2018by: Martha Leblanc - United StatesProgram: Jobs and internships in Spain
If you are looking to improve your Spanish skills, this is the place to go. Bilbao is the safest place I have ever lived in my life. Our group got along great and I really enjoyed making friends with the international students that also attended Instituto Hemingway. Instituto regularly schedules cultural events, and we attended nearly all of them. Languages and traveling are probably two of my favorite things in life so I absolutely had the time of my life studying abroad and am making plans to return (hopefully to live) as soon as possible. Bilbao is a great city for making new friends and trying new things. During my time in Spain I explored cultural differences and their social and historical causes and my knowledge of the Spanish language increased in a way that it never could have had I not been so utterly immersed in it. Travelling around Spain and Europe in general is so cheap! Please do it and have your headquarters in Bilbao in Northern Spain
