Why Work Abroad in Technology
With the recent tech boom, there is likely no shortage of technology job opportunities in your home country. Even so, if you have a penchant for adventure and are eager to learn about the cultures of the world, seeking an international tech job may help satiate your intellectual curiosities.
Remember, when looking for tech jobs abroad, your competition will be fierce. Companies seeking international employees will also be searching India and China’s labor pools, which are known worldwide for being advanced in the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Given the increased competition, you can expect your international tech job to be more impressive. When working alongside foreigners, you will see how technology actively dismisses borders and is a tool used for the general betterment of humanity.
It’s wild (and wonderful!) to speak Python, Java, or Ruby Rails with someone you can hardly hold an actual conversation with!
Locations
Although technology has found its way into almost every countries’ economic sector, not all locations are created equal. Some countries are ahead of the curve when it comes to new technologies, as well as research and development.
China. It is no secret that China is a powerhouse in the tech field, with no indication of slowing down. Futuristic cities, like Shanghai, make it apparent that China is among one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, with plenty of employment opportunities to boot. China has cultivated a culture of growth and development in order to reap more benefits from the trade-based economy, which has only helped them grow both economically and technologically.
Japan is another technologically advanced country, equipped with one of the most high-tech cities in the world, Tokyo. Japan has been ahead in the tech world for a long time, and with the third highest GDP in the world, there’s no contesting its innovative power. With a strong domestic market and global ties that allow their technology to expand, Japan is thriving, making it a great (but competitive) place to search for international tech jobs and begin your career abroad.
Germany is another country that is rapidly developing new technologies, which is evident when traveling to cities like Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. Many Germans are also known for their exceptional innovations in today’s world, but they are also remembered for the technological advancements they have made since the early 1900’s. Jobs in information technology are in high demand in this highly industrialized country, so expats looking for tech jobs in Europe should look no further than Germany.
Technology Jobs Abroad
Technology is a massive industry that provides countless international job opportunities. Not only is it a growing field within itself, but it is also continuously becoming more important for nearly every business and industry worldwide.
Information Technology encompasses many different industries within technology, like computer hardware, software, telecommunication, internet, and engineering. With a need for IT workers in both developed and developing countries, information technology is vital to the industries that exist today. Most commonly related to computer networks, the goal of information technology is to store, send, and retrieve information. The IT industry provides tech job opportunities around the world, making it a great career for those interested in working abroad.
Software Development continues to be another popular job for those interested in the tech industry. The job involves testing, maintaining, and improving applications, and operating system software. With the popularity of smartphones and apps, software development is a competitive field that requires creative, innovative people interested in taking development to the next level. From researching new softwares to actually creating them, this industry follows a process to constantly improve software products.
Social Media includes web-based and mobile based technologies. This sub-field has had an immeasurable effect on our world today. With an emphasis on constant sharing, and exchanging of pictures, videos, information, ideas, and links, people rely on many different facets of social media for various reasons. Social media is important for the majority of businesses today, and that is why it is a great (and #versatile) career path to pursue abroad.
Salary & Costs
Salaries for tech jobs abroad can vary depending on your location, company, and job title. Since the tech industry has so many different types of job opportunities, there is also a wide range of average incomes. International tech jobs will typically pay over $50,000, by U.S. standards, and this number will be similar in other developed countries and major cities. However, this again depends on your position, your host country’s economy, and the local cost of living. You can expect salaries for tech jobs to be much lower in countries like India and the Philippines, which are technological hotspots, but salaries will remain relative to the cost of living.
While looking for international tech jobs be sure to research the organization you will be working for, find out what your starting salary would be, and take into account the cost of living and other expenses, before you make the big move.
Accommodation & Visas
Working abroad in technology will, more often than not, involve working in a metropolitan area, in order to have access to all of the latest technologies and current resources necessary to make a tech job possible. You won’t only find tech job opportunities in big cities, but a homestay in a rural village seems unlikely for those working in technology abroad. You are much more likely to find accommodation in an apartment within close proximity to your place of work.
Required visas are dependent on what your nationality is and where you intend to work, but visas are typically required for foreigners that plan to work abroad. You’ll need to work closely with your employer and your local consulate to make sure you meet all the requirements and receive the right kind of visa for your job. Take advantage of online resources to find out what the visa process may look like for you and get started ASAP!
Benefits & Challenges
Time-Sensitive Technology. Technology is constantly evolving and expanding, making this a challenging industry to work in. While it is beneficial to be able to adapt to these changes as technology continues to develop, it can also be an extremely challenging and stressful industry, so watch your blood pressure!
Important Industries. The world only continues to advance in terms of technology, and at a rapid rate, so tech professionals are vital for businesses worldwide. While some industries are more competitive than others, getting a job in the tech world is extremely important nowadays.
