How to Work Abroad in Fashion Business

Prepare for Fashion Jobs Abroad

Understand the benefits

Fashion business jobs abroad are more than just a behind-the-scenes ticket to the runway. They give you a seat at the table and a better view of how the industry actually moves.

  • Learn how the industry really works. Fashion is global, and every region does it differently. What lands in New York might not make sense in Tokyo. Working abroad forces you to adapt fast and pay attention to local markets and consumer behavior.
  • Make decisions with more context. You’ll get closer to how fashion intersects with economics, culture, and logistics. There’s no substitute for seeing firsthand how supply chains shift or why product planning looks totally different across regions.
  • Work with people who know stuff you don’t. International teams run differently. Whether it’s a merchandiser in Tokyo or a buyer in London, you’ll learn how others approach challenges, manage timelines, and think through ideas. You become quicker, more flexible, and better at your job.

Things to know

This field is a mix of strategy, numbers, creativity, and logistics. And when you go abroad, there are some things to keep in mind:

  • Titles - A “fashion buyer” in the US might be called a “merchandiser” somewhere else. Same with visual merchandisers, sourcing specialists, and brand managers. Read between the lines on job boards.
  • Reality - Think beyond the catwalk. The real action is in supply chain, sales, marketing, and production. If you want to work with designers, learn how to get their product in stores first.
  • Language - English is the main language in many global fashion houses. But speaking the local language opens more doors, especially if you’re dealing with suppliers or customers.
  • Experience - Fashion degrees are useful, but hustle, internships, and results matter more. If you’ve helped a brand grow, hit sales targets, or organized a campaign, you’re in.
