How to Work Abroad in International Relations

Prepare for International Relations Jobs Abroad

Understand the benefits

Sitting in a classroom learning about geopolitics is one thing. Living it is another. When you take your international relations career abroad, the real-world learning never stops.

  • You build cross-cultural fluency. Working with diverse teams teaches you more than any lecture on cultural sensitivity. Communication becomes a skill you can’t fake.
  • You open serious career doors. Many global orgs hire from their intern or fellowship pools. Plus, having overseas experience on your CV shows adaptability, grit, and leadership. These are qualities that hiring managers really value.
  • You get perspective fast. It’s easy to form strong opinions about foreign policy from afar. When you’re on the ground, things get more nuanced. That’s a good thing.

Things to know

International relations jobs sound exciting on paper, but there are a few practical layers to keep in mind before you jump in.

  • Recruitment cycles - Many global orgs and fellowships recruit months in advance. Some even a year out. Keep tabs on deadlines and start prepping early if you want to be in the mix.
  • Living conditions – Working abroad isn’t always glamorous. Depending on the role, you might be based in a major capital or a remote field office with limited resources. Flexibility goes a long way.
  • Safety protocols - Some placements may be in conflict or post-conflict zones. Organizations typically offer security briefings and protocols, but you’ll need to be aware and prepared.

Dear Hiring Manager’s I am writing to apply for a position in your construction team. With a solid background in general construction work, including site preparation, masonry, carpentry, and equipment operation, I am confident that my skills and dedication would make me a valuable addition to your workforce. Over the past 8 years, I have worked on a variety of projects ranging from residential housing to commercial structures.
