Prepare for Jobs in Malaysia
Set goals
You’re probably eyeing Malaysia for work, and honestly, that’s a smart move. But before jumping in, take a minute to think about what you really want out of the experience.
- Be honest about why you're going. Is it to fund travel, build a career, or just try something new? Knowing your reason helps you filter out the noise.
- Pick jobs that make sense for where you're at. Malaysia has strong options in tech, marketing, education, and energy. Choose something that fits your experience and helps you move forward.
- Know what you’re walking into. Workplaces here tend to be structured and title-conscious. Just show up, stay flexible, and don’t assume you’ve got it all figured out.
Understand the benefits
There’s more to Malaysia than skyline views and spicy laksa. Working here comes with perks you’ll actually notice.
- Gateway to Asia. Living in Malaysia puts you within reach of Bangkok, Singapore, Bali, and more. Local salaries stretch further than expected, especially if you're coming from a pricier country.
- Multicultural lifestyle. With Malay, Chinese, Indian, and expat communities, life here is naturally diverse. You’ll switch between languages, festivals, and food styles in a single week.
- Professional growth. Tech and finance are expanding fast in Malaysia. There’s a real focus on innovation and roles that give you meaningful, hands-on experience.
Things to know
Working in Malaysia isn’t complicated, but there are a few things to have on your radar:
- Language - English is widely used in professional settings. Still, learning basic Malay goes a long way in daily life and helps with casual chats or local errands.
- Cost of living - Kuala Lumpur is much more affordable than places like Singapore or Hong Kong. Rent, transport, and eating out can be cheap if you know where to look.
- Work culture - People respect structure and titles, but that doesn’t mean things are stiff. Show you can take initiative without stepping on toes, and you’ll fit in fast.
Locations
Choose a Location
Malaysia is split between two coasts. The West Coast is more developed and urban, home to most of the population in cities like Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. These cities also offer the most job opportunities for foreigners.
Kuala Lumpur
As Malaysia’s economic and business hub, Kuala Lumpur is the top choice for expats looking to work abroad. It offers jobs in finance, real estate, media, and the arts. The city’s cultural diversity and urban lifestyle make it both livable and full of opportunity.
Johor Bahru
Malaysia’s second-largest city is known for its industrial growth and tourism appeal, especially its theme parks and resorts. It's a great spot for tourism-related work with strong compensation. The cost of living here is also lower than in Kuala Lumpur.
Ipoh
A laid-back city with British colonial charm and some of the country’s best street food, Ipoh is a favorite for those seeking a slower pace. It’s known as “Old Town” for its preserved heritage and calm vibe. Expats are drawn here for its cultural richness and solid job prospects.
Fields
Choose a Field
The job market can be competitive, especially when local candidates are equally skilled. Still, some industries tend to be more open to international talent, especially if you have the right experience, certifications, or strong English skills.
Education
As Malaysia expands its global reach, English proficiency is becoming a top priority. There's strong demand for English teachers, especially those with TEFL or TESOL certifications, and teaching here can be a great way to gain international experience while getting to know the local education system.
Tourism
With beaches, rainforests, and world-class resorts, Malaysia’s tourism sector is packed with opportunities. From hotel work to dive instruction, resort jobs often welcome international hires with hospitality or wellness experience.
Hospitality
With a strong tourism sector and a steady stream of business travelers, there’s always demand in hotels, food and beverage, and guest services. Larger chains and high-end hotels are often open to hiring expats with relevant experience.
Getting Started
Tips & Advice
Landing a job in Malaysia and making the move might feel like a lot at first, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With some planning and the right tools, you’ll be able to settle in smoothly and start working with confidence.
1. Get matched
Use the GoAbroad Online Advisor to find job options that line up with your background and goals. It saves you from digging through unrelated listings and connects you with roles that actually make sense for your next step.
2. Choose a program
Sign up for a MyGoAbroad account to keep track of job options you're interested in. You can compare programs, bookmark your favorites, and stay organized throughout the process.
3. Funding & scholarships
Relocating isn’t cheap, but there are ways to ease the financial load. Look into scholarships or grants, or launch a FundMyTravel page to crowdsource support from your network.
4. Apply
Once a job grabs your attention, click on "Apply Now" or "Inquire Here" on the program listing. This will connect you directly with the job offer provider, ensuring you receive personalized support throughout the application process.
5. Get your essentials
Make sure these core items are sorted well before departure:
- Visa - Apply early and double-check requirements. Most jobs will require a proper work permit.
- Flight - Booking in advance locks in your arrival timeline and helps with budgeting.
- Travel Insurance - It’s there to protect you from unexpected setbacks, big or small.
- Accommodation - Avoid the stress of last-minute rentals. Try to lock something in before you land, even if it’s just for your first month
Handling the essentials ahead of time means you’ll show up focused, prepared, and ready to actually enjoy the experience, not scramble through it.

Most amazing experience!
August 06, 2026by: Michelle Jowen - MalaysiaProgram: Contractual Position
I’m so glad I joined the Management Training Program with RMC Asia! I learned a lot while training at a 5-star Marriott hotel in Phuket, but honestly the experience was so much more than just work. It helped me become more confident, meet amazing people, and experience what it's like to work in an international environment. One of my favorite parts was meeting friends from all over the world, we literally became best friends! 🥹 We explored Phuket together, celebrated Songkran for the first time which was SO much fun, and made memories I'll never forget. Super grateful for this opportunity and would definitely recommend it to anyone who's thinking about joining!
